The number traces back to a plastic surgeon named Maxwell Maltz, who wrote in 1960 that it takes 'a minimum of about 21 days' for patients to get used to a new face, and turned that into a general rule for changing any mental image. His minimum became everyone else's total. But the idea stuck, got simplified, got repeated, and eventually became "fact."

A landmark study by Phillippa Lally and her team at University College London tracked 96 people as they tried to adopt small daily behaviours: drinking water with lunch, eating a piece of fruit, going for a run before dinner. On average, those behaviours started to feel automatic after 66 days. But here's the part that usually gets left out of the headlines: the range was 18 to 254 days.
