Check email before getting out of bed. Respond to a message during dinner. Think through tomorrow's agenda while trying to fall asleep. Keep the laptop open "just in case." The specific patterns vary, but the underlying condition is the same: a growing inability (or unwillingness) to truly switch off.
This isn't a willpower problem. It's an architecture problem. The technology, the culture, and the expectations around availability have built an environment in which genuine rest is treated as something you slot in when everything else is done. Which means, for a lot of people, genuine rest rarely happens at all.
The brain has a structure specifically associated with rest: the default mode network. It activates when you're not actively focused on a task, when your mind is allowed to wander, to make connections across unrelated things, to process recent experience without a specific goal in mind. This is not idle time. It's when a lot of the most important cognitive work happens: consolidating memory, making creative leaps, gaining perspective on problems that direct focus hasn't solved.
When there's always a screen, a notification or a work-adjacent thought competing for attention, the mind gets fewer of the unfocused stretches in which this network does its work.

Psychological detachment from work, the ability to mentally disengage, not just physically step away, turns out to be a meaningful predictor of recovery quality. Not because they're working less, but because they're recovering more completely.
What does actual switching off look like? It's more active than passive. Scrolling a feed isn't rest; it's low-level stimulation that keeps the brain in a reactive mode. Genuinely restorative activities tend to involve some combination of physical engagement, social connection without performance pressure, low-stakes creative activity, or simply being somewhere pleasant without an agenda. Even doing nothing (sitting quietly, staring out a window) has a place here if it allows the mind to genuinely wander rather than spin.
There's no single prescription. But there's a useful principle: rest has to be protected, not just hoped for. It doesn't appear naturally in the gaps between tasks. It has to be deliberately chosen and defended, which, in an always-on world, is itself a kind of discipline.
